Auto Accident/ Auto Collision/ Distracted Driving

The United States of America had roughly 46,000 highway fatalities in 2022 which was an increase of 22% from 2021 as shown in the most recent National Transportation Safety Board's data. Of that, New Mexico had 467 road deaths, as reported by the Albuquerque Journal, meaning one to two people die every day on New Mexico's roadways. For New Mexico, a major factor in accident fatalities was alcohol which accounted for almost 23% of all crashes. Additionally, almost 20% of all fatalities were to a pedestrian.  Already this year, 2023, New Mexico has suffered 64 traffic fatalities in January and February per the New Mexico Department of Transportation.

The main cause of the national increase in traffic fatalities is the unsafe use of cell phones and other forms of distracted driving that experts blame for this massive increase. Bruce Landsberg, Vice Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, stated:

"[t]his is an epidemic" during his interview with the Los Angeles Times. He also noted that "[e]verybody talks about fatalities, but there are hundreds of thousands or more life-altering injuries - broken limbs, brain injuries, horrible burns. This doesn't have to happen. These crashes are not accidents. They are completely preventable."

New Mexican's most dangerous daily activity is driving. Sadly, the way our state and the City of Albuquerque have been created makes it a necessity that you have to drive multiple times every day whether it is to work, school, the grocery store, and/or a restaurant. This necessary activity puts your family and you at risk to the reckless/negligent driving of others on New Mexico's roadways.
